Unifor and the other unions believe that a strong strike vote is the only way to reach a fair collective agreement and to roll back the concessions demanded by the employer. The Unifor Negotiating Committee is pleased to announce that members voted 92 per cent in favour of ratifying an agreement with NSHA and IWK to go to mediation and binding arbitration. The Council of Health Trade Unions is made up of CUPE, NSGEU, NSNU and Unifor. The Council was decided by law to negotiate 16 collective agreements for the IWK and one for the NSHA. Final collective agreements for unionized workers employed by the Nova Scotia Health Authority and the IWK Health Centre ended a laborious negotiation process that began after the province`s district health authorities merged in 2014. The four unions look forward to working with mediator William Kaplan, who will try to help the parties reach an agreement through mediation, but will give a final and binding distinction on unresolved issues. This award was the subject of a six-year agreement. There are about two years left in the term of office. If there is no agreement on sickness and pension benefits through the negotiation process or mediation, the arbitrator must grant the status quo as in past agreements. The new collective agreement for the Health Unit and its 6,000 members is officially concluded with this supplement. If the agreement is ratified, it provides for a mediation arbitration process that will conclude collective agreements for the four bargaining committees on the safety, care, assisted care and administrator committees. McNeil Liberal legislation prohibits health care workers from striking until a key service agreement has been reached and this has not yet been negotiated.
